Combative Hapkido

Hapkido is a dynamic and eclectic Korean martial art which employs the basic philosophy of using minimal force to overcome a stronger opponent. In Korean language, “HAP” means coordination, harmony; “KI” defines the power of mind, internal energy, spirit, strength or power; “DO” means way of life or way of learning. Thus, Hapkido can be translated as the way (art) of coordinated power.

Hapkido incorporates both "hard & soft" techniques in one art. It employs the "soft" techniques similar to aikido but usually at a smaller circle and more combative techniques. It emphasises circular motion, non-resisting movements, leverage and control of the opponent. It is a smart streetwise martial art that teaches tactics using the principles of balance, speed, accuracy and leverage, utilising the opponent’s force and momentum to overcome an opponent. Hence, strength is not a prerequisite in learning the art. It will develop naturally as a result of training.

Combative Hapkido includes a set of techniques and tactics using strikes, punches, kicks, chokes, joint locks, sweeps, takedowns, throws, pressure points and pins to control an attacker. It also includes the use of everyday items, such as pens, magazines, bags, umbrella etc as defensive weapons.

Combative Hapkido is suitable for adults from all ages. It is also ideal for children as it teaches the virtues of discipline and diligence while learning self-defence. It develops their maturity well in advance. Young martial artists will learn the importance of self-control, confidence, discipline and mutual respect from the group training. The training involves a high level of physical activity that teaches them the benefits of exercise and healthy lifestyle. The study of martial art will definitely be a life shaping experience for them!
